Pin Up Reflections

The Pin Up

This past week, I had to present a Pin Up to my colleagues about my capstone project. The pin up I presented is shown below entirety. It went through what my problem space is, who my users and stakeholders are, some of the current solutions within the problem space, my design ides, and my methods. I also opted to include questions I believe my work should hope to find answers to.

I wanted to keep the design of the pin up light, airy, and easy to navigate. For this reason, I kept what I believed to be the main narrative on the upper portion of the pin up and the supplemental narrative of the solution exemplars on the lower portion of the pin up.

The Feedback

The majority of the feedback that I got back were in concern to the "Users and Stakeholders" and the "Design Ideas" sections. Here's a zoom in on those sections.

Users and Stakeholders

For my "Users and Stakeholders" section, all of the feedback I received was in reference to the inclusion of the press.

The Good

A couple of different commenters praised the inclusion of the press because it is one of the staple ways that people get information about the world around them.

The Bad

One of the commenters questioned about how much sway the press will have because the problem space specifically is looking into local government.

Applying this Feedback

This feedback makes me feel confident in the inclusion of the press as a stakeholder. However, the inclusion of the press as a user is one that will make any resulting design different. I want to look into how the press would utilize a design differently than a resident. Do they search differently? These are routes that would need explored.

Design Ideas

For my "Design Ideas" section, the feedback primarily focused around the physical manifestation of my design.

The Good

The idea of the physical kiosk was praised as an option that should be pushed for by one commenter. Another commenter liked the idea of a physical design, but wondered if it had to be digital. Instead they suggested considering paper designs liked pamphlets.

The Bad

The kiosk will require several questions to be answered. These include:

Who maintains the kiosks?
Where do the kiosks go?
How many kiosks will there be?
What does the kiosk show (exactly)?

Applying this Feedback

This feedback has me thinking about the complexities of introducing physical elements into my design. They brought up good points about the constraints of budget and how this may impact the design. This is a major concern considering the issues that the mayor's office is having with passing the budget currently.

Other Feedback

I got the feedback that I did not include any design components and my response to this was because I am still unsure as to the design components that I want to include. This was definitely a gap in my presentation and one I will need to reflect on some more. The overall feedback provided myself and my other colleagues who presented also mentions the lack of justification for the methods that were listed in the pin ups.

Applying this Feedback

I think that this feedback really pushes me to consider my design rationale and presenting it. I agree that I need to consider the different design components. This reflection on these pieces of feedback will be a driving force in how I present my work in the future.
